Bread of God

(Message from Jayne) I have an app on my phone that sends me a daily Scripture reading. One morning I opened it and read the scripture from John 6:35 - 'Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty."' The words 'bread of life' seemed to be shouting at me - so I continued reading intently and came to the verse a little further on in John 6 - "I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And this bread, which I will give for the life of the world, is My flesh." This seems like a harsh teaching - how 'culturally correct' is it to talk about eating... Flesh??? Not correct at all. Even violent and terrible? However, a person that has put their faith in Christ has accepted the fact that his physical punishment and death has replaced their own punishment and death. Our sin (a very unpopular word, but can anyone truly say that their heart is holy?) brings us into judgment before God. We cannot stand on our own goodness. But we can put our faith in Christ's punishment as replacing our own - God's plan of salvation, redemption, atonement, whatever you'd like to call it. It was his idea - a perfect God's sacrifice on behalf of mankind. Kind of like a big brother who offers to take the spanking coming to his little brother, because he loves his little brother so much.  (My own son did this and I've never forgotten that moment.) However, Christ's stepping in to take our own punishment was an eternal act - once and for all. Christians remember Christ's act of sacrifice when we eat the bread and drink the wine that represent, symbolically, his body and blood, given for us.
